Emily Allen Nilsen is an educator, musician, former Peace Corps Volunteer, and minister with a passion for seeking peace on and for the earth. Emily grew up in a small farming community in Southern Illinois, and she became connected with Community of Christ through her 4th grade teacher, Marilyn Morris. She credits Community of Christ summer camps with saving her life and feels most at home singing and playing instruments around a campfire. Eventually, her experience at camps led her to attend Graceland University and become a member of the church. After graduating, she moved from the Midwest to Portland with her husband, Andrew, to experience the beauty and joy that is Oregon and the Northwest.
In her vocation and her life, Emilyβs heart is about finding ways for people to feel whole, loved, and supported. A lifelong teacher, Emily has taught 2nd-11th grade in Iowa, Oregon, Outdoor School, and as a Peace Corps Volunteer in Nicaragua. She currently supports all 11 elementary schools in the Tigard-Tualatin school district as a Social Emotional Learning and Restorative Practices Coach.
Her two children, Finley (6) and Soren (3), are the light of her life as she actively works to practice what she preaches - to raise her littles with healing and joy. Emily finds purpose in cultivating community across difference and thinks summer camps are the closest thing to Zion.
