Welcome to Reading for Change! This is an expansion of Love Out Loud in which we will read quarterly books that will culminate in connecting with an organization that supports the mission of the book. We meet at 6:00 p.m. Pacific Time on the 1st Thursday of each month.
We’ll do a deep dive on environmental justice to align with the 2026 Community of Christ Peace Forum: Seeds of Peace - https://cofchrist.org/peace-forum/
We’ll also be preparing for the 2026 Youth Justice Summit, hosted in partnership with the Sacramento Congregation.
If you are looking for a book that both sooths your soul and calls you to care more deeply for the earth, look no further than Robin Wall Kimmerer’s Braiding Sweetgrass. We have been reading this book together for our Reading for Change group, and we have been transformed. Kimmerer’s invitation is to see all flourishing as reciprocal on this beautiful planet we inhabit. She offers indigenous and scientific wisdom through stories and research.
All of our Reading for Change books in 2026 have focused on environmental justice, but this particular book weaves spirituality, plant science, and interconnectedness to care for the earth. You are invited to join us as we continue to explore this book through August and September on the first Thursday of the month at 6:00 PM Pacific Time. We always structure our conversation so that anyone can participate, regardless of how much of the reading you have finished.
